Game Overview

Air Factors is an exciting two-player competitive multiplication game that combines physical ball-throwing mechanics with times table practice. Players compete head-to-head in a hockey-style arena, throwing numbered balls to solve multiplication problems and score points.

Game Concept

Think multiplication meets air hockey! Two players face off across an ice rink, each armed with numbered balls (1-13) that they must strategically throw into their opponent’s goal to create correct multiplication equations. It’s fast-paced, competitive, and makes learning times tables incredibly engaging.

How to Play

Setup Phase

  1. Choose Your Times Table: Select from tables 2-13, or pick the dice (🎲) for random mixed tables
  2. Select Game Mode:
    • Sequence: Problems appear in order (2×1, 2×2, 2×3, etc.)
    • Random: Problems appear in shuffled order
  3. Problem Sharing Options:
    • Different: Each player gets independent target numbers
    • Same: Both players work toward the same target (cooperative competition)

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Player Positions: Player 1 (left side) throws to the right goal, Player 2 (right side) throws to the left goal
  • Ball Throwing: Drag and release numbered balls to launch them across the ice
  • Target Numbers: Each player sees their target number at the top of the screen
  • Equation Building: Throw exactly 2 balls into the opponent’s goal to create a multiplication equation

Scoring System

  • Green (+1 point): Correct product AND one factor matches your chosen times table
  • Purple (0 points): Correct product but wrong times table (neutral)
  • Red (-1 point): Incorrect product

Special Features

  • Table Toggle: Rotate balls and reorder Player 2’s sequence (ascending/descending)
  • Smart Ball Shuffling: Ball order becomes more challenging as players improve
  • Physics-Based: Realistic ball physics with bouncing and momentum
  • Visual Feedback: Goals light up in different colors based on answer correctness
  • Confetti Celebrations: Successful answers trigger particle effects

Problem Ranges

  • Tables 2-10: Practice problems from ×1 to ×10 (10 problems each)
  • Tables 11-13: Practice problems from ×1 to the table number (11, 12, or 13 problems)
  • Dice Mode: Random selection from all tables with 20 mixed problems

Winning Conditions

  • Different Mode: First player to complete all problems in their times table wins
  • Same Mode: Both players advance together; winner determined by completion and score
  • Games can also end when a player reaches the maximum score threshold

Strategy Tips

  1. Aim Carefully: Use the drag-and-release mechanic to control ball direction and speed
  2. Times Table Focus: Remember that one factor must be from your chosen table (except in dice mode)
  3. Quick Thinking: Identify factor pairs quickly – is it 3×8 or 4×6 for target 24?
  4. Goal Positioning: Balls stick in goals, so plan your throws to avoid collisions
  5. Table Knowledge: Strong times table knowledge gives a significant competitive advantage

Educational Benefits

  • Multiplication Fluency: Rapid practice with times tables 2-13
  • Factor Recognition: Students learn to identify multiple factor pairs for the same product
  • Mental Math: Quick calculation under competitive pressure
  • Strategic Thinking: Planning throws and recognizing optimal factor combinations
  • Competitive Learning: Peer-to-peer competition motivates practice and improvement

Technical Features

  • Multi-touch Support: Multiple players can throw balls simultaneously
  • Responsive Physics: Realistic ball movement with collision detection
  • Adaptive Difficulty: Ball shuffling increases complexity based on performance
  • Cross-platform: Works on desktop, tablet, and interactive whiteboard setups
  • Sound Effects: Audio feedback for throws, successes, and failures

Ideal For

  • Classroom Competition: Two students competing while class watches and cheers
  • Math Centers: Self-directed practice with built-in engagement
  • Assessment Tool: Quick evaluation of times table fluency
  • Home Practice: Siblings or parent-child competition
  • Math Tournaments: School-wide multiplication competitions

Air Factors transforms the often tedious task of memorizing times tables into an exciting, competitive sport that students actually want to play. The combination of physical skill (aiming and throwing) with mathematical knowledge creates a unique learning experience that appeals to different learning styles and keeps students engaged for extended practice sessions.
